The Voltex X: A Split-System Heat Pump Water Heater Built for Multifamily

A.O. Smith's Voltex X split-system heat pump water heater puts the compressor outdoors: zero indoor noise, no cold-air penalty, and no energy-model interaction load in multifamily units.

A.O. Smith just shipped a split-system heat pump water heater with an outdoor compressor and zero indoor noise. For anyone who has been shoehorning all-in-one heat pump water heaters into multifamily units, this one is worth a very close look.

Heat pump water heaters are the right answer on paper. They are three to four times more efficient than resistance elements, they satisfy energy codes, and they are the only in-unit electric option that will not wreck your load calculations. But anyone who has actually specced them into a multifamily project knows the things nobody puts in the marketing brochure.

The Problem We Have Been Living With

Four costs show up the moment you try to fit an all-in-one heat pump water heater into an apartment.

  • Noise. 45 to 55 dBA of compressor hum in a closet that shares a wall with someone's bedroom. It is comparable to a running dishwasher: nonstop, all night, whenever someone showers.
  • Cold air discharge. Active units dump 2,500 to 5,000 BTU/hr of cooling into the surrounding space. In winter that is conditioned heat you just paid to generate, now being exhausted by the water heater.
  • Air volume requirements. A unit needs 700 to 1,000 cubic feet of free air just to operate. A standard in-unit mechanical closet does not come close, so you duct it, louvre it, or give up efficiency.
  • Energy model interaction. The unit pulls heat from conditioned air, which forces the mini-split to work harder. That cooling load shows up in your energy model and has to be offset somewhere else.

The workarounds are real costs: louvered closet doors, exhaust ducting to corridors, oversized mechanical spaces, acoustic insulation. Each one adds dollars and construction complexity to a project where margins are already thin.

Enter the Voltex X

The HPACO-45 is a split system. The compressor lives outside, on a wall, the ground, or the rooftop, connected to an indoor storage tank by a pre-charged refrigerant line set. The outdoor unit does all the heat-pump work. The indoor tank is just a tank: silent, no airflow requirements, no cold draft.

It runs on CO₂ refrigerant (GWP of 1, the lowest available), operates from -25°F to 109°F without a backup resistance element, and delivers a UEF of 3.80. The pre-charged line set means the installer does not need EPA Section 608 certification, a meaningful reduction in friction on the trade side.

A.O. Smith's own spec language is "40 dBA outside and 0 dBA inside." Zero. The only heat pump water heater that can make that claim is the one where the compressor never enters the building.

The Honest Cost Trade-Off

The split system is more expensive upfront and there is no getting around that. But once you account for what the all-in-one actually requires in a multifamily closet, the gap narrows fast. Here is the line-by-line comparison:

A note on those numbers: Voltex X unit pricing is not yet widely published at retail, so the figures above are estimated from the A.O. Smith Voltex family range and installer market feedback. The 25C federal tax credit, formerly up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pump water heaters, expired December 31, 2025, so check current state and utility incentives.

On a single unit the premium might still sting. Across a 30-unit building the math shifts, especially when you consider what happens after installation.

The Energy Model Argument

Here is the angle that does not get enough attention. When you put an all-in-one heat pump water heater inside a conditioned apartment, it is not just heating water. It is cooling the unit. That 2,500 to 5,000 BTU/hr cold discharge has to go somewhere, and in a sealed apartment it goes right back into the mini-split's heating load.

Energy models capture this. The unit's operating hours, the zone it is modeled in, and whether it pulls from conditioned or ambient air all factor into how the building's compliance numbers pencil out. In a heating-dominated climate, an in-unit all-in-one creates a real interactive load: the space conditioning system works harder to offset the water heater's cooling effect.

  • All-in-one, in-unit: the water heater pulls heat from conditioned apartment air, the unit gets colder, the mini-split runs longer to compensate, the modeled space heating load increases, and compliance margin shrinks.
  • Voltex X, outdoor: the compressor draws from outdoor ambient air, so there is no thermal interaction with the conditioned space. Space heating load is unchanged, and the energy model performs as if the water heater is not indoors at all.

For projects where the energy model is already tight, and in 2025 and 2026 code environments most are, eliminating that interaction load can be the difference between needing another compliance measure or not. That is a cost avoidance that never shows up in the water heater line item but absolutely shows up in the project budget.

Could This Be the One?

The all-in-one heat pump water heater asks a lot of a building: give me space, give me airflow, tolerate my noise, and accept that I am going to cool your apartment while I heat your water. For a single-family home with a basement or garage, that is a reasonable ask. For an apartment unit with a mechanical closet the size of a phone booth, it has been a grudging compromise dressed up as a code-compliant solution.

The Voltex X is one of the first products to take a real run at eliminating those compromises rather than mitigating them. It is new, announced by A.O. Smith and Panasonic in early 2026 and not yet widely in installer hands, so the real-world data is still thin. Cold-climate performance of an outdoor-mounted CO₂ system at -25°F sounds compelling, but that is a claim that needs a New England winter or two behind it before we would write it into a spec without a conversation.

Still, imagine speccing a water heater for a multifamily unit and the answer to "what about noise?" is "there isn't any." That is not a feature. That is a category shift.

The cost delta is real, but it is potentially offset by what you save on closet design, ducting, and energy model compliance headroom.
